Excalibur is a sword-themed Warframe. With the power to channel energy into his summoned blade, he is a mobile swordsman with potent methods of execution. He is one of three starter options for new players.

Acquisition

Excalibur is one of the three starter Warframes, alongside  Mag and  Volt, during Awakening.

Excalibur's main blueprint can be purchased from the Market. Excalibur's component blueprints can be obtained from defeating Lieutenant Lech Kril on War, Mars.

Alternatively, upon completion of The Duviri Paradox, Excalibur's main and component blueprints can be earned from The Circuit. By selecting him on the rotating week he is available, players can earn his blueprints after reaching Tier 2 (Neuroptics), 5 (Chassis), 8 (Systems), and 10 (Main) rewards.

Excalibur can also be bought complete from Teshin for 60,000 Standing 60,000 once players have achieved Typhoon rank in the Conclave.

Trivia

• Excalibur is named after the legendary sword of King Arthur. Many of Excalibur's alternate helmets feature names based off Arthurian legend.
• Excalibur is based on Hayden Tenno's suit from the original Dark Sector concept by Digital Extremes, WARFRAME's conceptual precursor.
  • Digital Extremes' previously released game Dark Sector is a reimagining of said concept, with its version of the suit being available as the Proto-Armor Skin.
• Excalibur costs less Platinum Platinum to purchase him outright than to rush construction of the components and main blueprint.
• He is the first of two Warframes with an unpolarized Aura slot,  Nekros being the second.
• An Excalibur is shown being ripped apart by Alad V while wearing the Pendragon Helmet and the Immortal Skin in "The Profit", a trailer for the PS4 release of WARFRAME.
• Prior to Update 14, Excalibur would use his equipped melee weapon when casting his abilities, regardless if it was impractical (casting  Radial Javelin with a  Galatine), nonsensical ( Slash Dashing with the  Kogake) or impossible (using any of his abilities without a melee weapon equipped). Update 14 changed this by making him generate an ethereal  Skana when using his abilities, rather than using his melee weapon.
  • If there was no melee weapon equipped, then Excalibur would use the currently equipped weapon. (i.e. Radial Javelin with a  Braton). Humorously, ethereal copies of that weapon would appear upon using Radial Javelin.
• Before Hotfix 22.8.3 (2018-01-11), Excalibur parts blueprints dropped from Ambulas on Hades, Pluto. This is now the drop location of  Trinity.
• In Update 23.0 (2018-06-15), Excalibur's  Exalted Blade received a physical form to allow for customization, replacing its previous form which was made from pure energy.
  • The same update also allowed players to directly mod  Exalted Blade.
• According to the Official Tenno Alphabet Cipher, the design on Excalibur's right shoulder is in fact a word that spells out "Hayden Tenno". The same word can be found on top of Excalibur's head.
• Excalibur's default helmet was added to the real-time strategy game Airmech as a victory gesture after Warframe beating Airmech in a vote of popularity between the two.
  • This was originally intended to be Excalibur Prime's default helmet, however the reason for this change is unknown.
• Excalibur's default helmet (along with the default helmets of  Loki and  Chroma) are available as unlockable antenna toppers in Rocket League.
• Having 12 alternate helmets, Excalibur has the most alternate helmets out of any Warframe, with Excalibur Prime's being exclusive.
• Excalibur has the most variations out of any Warframe: base,  Excalibur Prime (Founder's exclusive),  Excalibur Umbra, and  Excalibur Umbra Prime (Warframe China Exclusive).

Release Date: December 18th, 2012

Excalibur Prime is the Primed variant of  Excalibur, possessing higher armor and energy, as well as an additional polarity and a Aura polarity. Excalibur Prime is a Founders-exclusive Warframe released alongside  Lato Prime and  Skana Prime.

Acquisition

Excalibur Prime was only obtainable by upgrading a Warframe account to Founders status of Hunter or greater, which is no longer available. He came with his own Warframe slot and was already augmented with an Orokin Reactor.

The Founders' program closed on the 1st of November, 2013, as announced on the Warframe Forums. This closure is inclusive of pack upgrades.

• As with any other Prime Warframe, moving close to the location of an Orokin Void Death Orb will restore a pulse of 250 Energy to nearby allies, even if that Death Orb is inactive, destroyed, or non-present. This effect can only occur once per orb.

Trivia

• Excalibur Prime is the first Prime Warframe in the game.
  • He is also the first Prime Warframe to come with two different polarities, as opposed to one. This was followed by  Ember Prime and  Loki Prime.
• There is a statue of Excalibur Prime inside the Orokin Vaults on Deimos, and one of the Lua Spy vaults.
  • Interestingly, at the start of Update 11.0 (2013-11-20) Excalibur Prime was given a short-lived full body skin called "Alabaster", which was explained by Digital Extremes as a test skin that was released by mistake. The skin's texture was similar to said Vault statues.
• Compared to the later prime Warframes, Excalibur Prime has the least cosmetic difference compared to his standard counterpart, with the only significant additions being the Void Key-shaped emblem on his helmet and golden blades along his forearms.
• When he was released, it was widely believed that Excalibur Prime had a slightly higher shield recharge rate compared to the non-prime variant.
  • While the existence of this feature can neither be confirmed, nor denied, Excalibur Prime currently does not possess this stat change.
• Much like how Update 14.0 (2014-07-18) gave the standard Excalibur an ethereal  Skana when using his abilities, Excalibur Prime uses an ethereal  Skana Prime with his abilities, which was also added in the same update.
• On the Chinese build of Warframe, Excalibur Umbra Prime serves as a stand-in for Excalibur Prime.

 Excalibur has improved mastery in the Tenno art of the blade, receiving +10% Attack Speed and +10% damage bonuses for melee attacks while wielding the following weapons:

• Swords, such as the  Skana.
• Dual swords, such as the  Dual Skana.
• Nikanas, such as the  Dragon Nikana.
• Rapiers, such as the  Destreza.
•  Exalted Blade
• Bonuses are additive to mods such as  Pressure Point and  Fury.

 Excalibur Umbra exhibits sentience, allowing him to remain active in combat even when a player uses Operator form, acting similarly to a Specter.

• Umbra can receive damage and healing in his specter form. Health and shields lost in his specter form will not be restored upon returning to Umbra unless all of Umbra's health is depleted.
• Once all of Umbra's health is depleted, he will stop moving or attacking.
  • The player does not die or lose a revive, however, if Umbra's health is depleted.
• Umbra can use any equipped weapon and most abilities, which will take into account any mods installed.
• When enemies come within 3 meters of Umbra, he will automatically switch to the equipped melee weapon.
  • If no melee weapon is equipped, Umbra will not attack enemies who approach him, but will still cast abilities.
• Umbra's weapons will still expend ammo reserves normally. Umbra is capable of looting ammo pickups, and will actively search for them should his ammo reserves be depleted.
  • Depleting all ammo reserves displays a red ammunition icon above Umbra's head.
  • Squad Ammo Restores will replenish ammo but only if the player is in range, even if Umbra himself is in range.
• If Umbra falls down a bottomless pit while in Specter mode, he will not be teleported back and will remain missing until players return to Warframe mode.

Umbra's passive can be disabled with  Warrior's Rest.

Radial Blind is also replaced with Radial Howl:

  • Stunned enemies are vulnerable to melee finishers and susceptible to stealth damage bonus.
  • Radial Howl will not affect enemies behind obstacles in the environment unless Excalibur Umbra has line of sight, or unless the enemy is aware of Excalibur Umbra within a short period of time (e.g., an enemy that spots Excalibur Umbra and runs out of view is still susceptible to Radial Howl if the ability is used within a small time frame).
• Enemies affected by the ability are stunned for the entire duration.
  • Bosses are still able to move, attack, or use abilities while affected by the ability.

• Excalibur expends 25 Energy to dash forward 6 / 8 / 10 / 12 meters to cut enemies down with his Exalted Blade, automatically chaining to additional enemies within ? / ? / ? / 7 meters. Each strike inflicts 100 / 125 / 200 / 250  Slash damage with a guaranteed  Slash proc and  Knockdown.
  • Slash Dash is affected by Aim Glide.
  • Slash Dash is affected by momentum, but will not change momentum outside of its animation. Thus, whichever way you were going before you cast Slash Dash you will continue to go unless stopped, by other means, at same speed. This will affect how far your Slash Dash will go when not targeted.
  • Chained Slash Dash can be cancelled by jumping or rolling.

    Base Damage × (1 + Damage Mods) × (1 + Elemental Mod) × (1 + Strength Mods) =
    250 × (1 + 1.2) × (1 + 0.9) × (1 + 0.3) = 1,358.5 damage.
  • Slash Dash is not affected by the equipped melee weapon's stats and innate effects, Faction Damage Mods, class-specific mods,  Condition Overload, or Acolyte Mods.
    • The only exceptions to this rule are:
      •  Venka Prime's modified Melee Combo Counter.
  • Mods equipped on  Exalted Blade do not affect Slash Dash unless it is active.
  • Slash Dash's damage composition is not affected by  Chromatic Blade.
  • Slash Dash's cone length is not affected by melee range mods (e.g.,  Reach).
• Every instance of damage adds to the Melee Combo Counter regardless of the amount of enemies hit or if Excalibur physically made contact with the target.
• Excalibur has Health invulnerability to damage during Slash Dash. Shields will still take damage and Energy Draining affects can still be applied to Excalibur, such as from Ancient Disruptors.
• Airborne enemies, such as Hellions and Ospreys, can also be targeted, but are still difficult for Slash Dash to traverse to unless the aim button is held for Aim Glide physics to take effect.
• If there are no enemies within its targeting area, Slash Dash will make Excalibur dash forward in the direction of aim, allowing it to be used as a mobility aid when reaching high places.
• Can be used to pass through Laser Barriers unharmed in most cases.
• Can be used while jumping, sliding, forward flipping, wall running or clinging to a wall.
• Slash Dash can damage enemies across the Rift Plane.
• Slash Dash is affected by and can trigger Warframe Arcanes.
  •  Arcane Blade Charger and  Arcane Fury affect both the initial hit and the bleed proc damage of Slash Dash.
• Slash dash is affected by Melee Arcanes.
  •  Melee Retaliation increases both the initial hit and the bleed proc damage of Slash Dash.
• Ability Synergy:
  • When  Exalted Blade is active, Slash Dash gains the following benefits:
    • Slash Dash will receive a 10% bonus to its base damage from Excalibur's passive as  Exalted Blade is considered a longsword.
    • Slash Dash hits will add to Exalted Blade's Melee Combo Counter.
    •  Exalted Blade will release an energy wave when an enemy is hit by Slash Dash.

• Slash Dash will hit through a Grineer Shield Lancer's Shield.
• With high Ability Range and not aiming at enemies, players can launch themselves into the air, travel with high velocity and long distance.
• Can be used to pass through Corpus laser doors mostly unharmed.
• Perfect for medium-distance traveling.
• With the proper mods this is one of the most damage-efficient AoE abilities in the game, doing massive damage to multiple targets for very little cost.
• Invulnerability allows players to deal with enemies by repeatedly casting Slash Dash without fear of damage from enemies or status procs during the animation. However, being that there is no invulnerability overlap between the end of the first cast and the beginning of the second cast, there is a small window for Excalibur to receive damage.
• Casting Slash Dash while Exalted Blade is active will allow players to increase the amount of damage they deal and hit a larger amount of enemies without having to build for range.
• Pressing the melee button at any time during the targeted Slash Dash cast will cancel the rest of ability's targets and summon your melee weapon instantly.

Bugs

• It is possible to get stuck on an enemy during the duration of the ability, and in most cases the enemy will not take damage.

Excalibur then drives his weapon into the ground, launching the javelins into their targets. Each javelin inflicts 500 / 650 / 800 / 1000 damage evenly distributed between  Impact,  Puncture, adn  Slash, with a guaranteed  Slash proc and  Stagger.
  • While javelins do not punch through objects or enemies, their striking position is optimized to ensure a successful hit on their targets when they spawn. This allows the javelins to bypass obstacles in the environment including walls, cover, and Grineer Shield Lancer shields.
  • Radial Javelin will not target enemies behind obstacles in the environment unless Excalibur has line of sight, or unless the enemy is aware of Excalibur within a short period of time (e.g., an enemy that spots Excalibur and runs out of view can still be targeted by Radial Javelin if the ability is used within a small time frame).
• Each javelin appears as an ethereal  Skana.  Excalibur Prime and  Excalibur Umbra javelins appear as ethereal  Skana Primes and "Umbra" Javelins respectively.

• Excalibur draws an ethereal Skana, the  Exalted Blade, and wields it as his melee Exalted Weapon. Normal attacks inflict 100 / 125 / 200 / 250 damage within 2 meters.
  • Damage is distributed between 15%  Impact, 15%  Puncture, and 70%  Slash.
  • Wall attacks inflict 400 / 500 / 800 / 1000 damage.
  • Slide attacks inflict 214 / 267.5 / 428 / 536 damage and  Blind enemies within 5 meters over a duration of 6 seconds at the cost of 25 energy.
  • Aerial attacks and slam attacks inflict 200 / 250 / 400 / 500 damage, and slam attacks inflict an additional 50  Impact damage within 5 meters.
• Normal, slide, and aerial attacks will emit an energy wave in the direction of aim. Energy waves have the same base damage as the attacks that release them, inflicts  Stagger, and fly at a constant speed of 15 m/s until they dissipate after 2.5s which corresponds to a maximum distance of 37.5 meters.
  • The energy waves and Exalted Blade itself are considered separate entities and will both deal damage separately.
  • Energy waves will punch through and hit enemies and terrain regardless of thickness up to their maximum range.
  • Energy wave lifetime decreases 0.5s (7.5m) for every enemy hit from the max lifetime of 2.5s (37.5m).
  • Wave damage falls off linearly with distance from 100% to 85% between 0 and 6.5m and 28% to 0% between 6.5m and 37.5m.
• Attacks and energy waves have a 2.0x critical multiplier, 15% critical chance and a 15% status chance.
• Damage is affected by  Ability Strength and most mods.
  • Being a Sword, Exalted Blade will always gain the 10% damage and attack speed bonuses of Excalibur's Passive.
  • As an example, with a maxed  Pressure Point,  Shocking Touch and  Intensify, the normal attacks and corresponding energy waves of a rank-3 Exalted Blade will deal
    Base Damage × (1 + Swordsmanship Bonus + Damage Mods) × (1 + Elemental Mods) × (1 + Strength Mods) = 250 × (1 + 0.3) × (1 + 0.1 + 1.2) × (1 + 0.9) = 1,420.25 damage.
  • The mods that can be equipped on and affect  Exalted Blade include:
    • damage (e.g.,  Steel Charge)
    • physical (e.g.,  Heavy Trauma)
    • elemental (e.g.,  Molten Impact)

      • Note that apart from physical damage mods and  Shattering Impact, all mods will still affect Exalted Blade when  Chromatic Blade is equipped.
      • While officially Set Mod bonuses do not affect Exalted Weapons (with the exception of the Sacrificial Mod Set), the Gladiator Mod Set can still apply if equipped on Melee and not on the Exalted Weapon itself.
  • Each melee attack adds to the Melee Combo Counter while energy waves and radial damage from slam attacks do not.
    • Slash status effects generated from waves while  Relentless Combination is equipped will grant combo counts to Exalted Blade.
  • Exalted Blade can not be equipped with weapon augments (e.g.,  Justice Blades), weapon-specific mods (e.g.,  Covert Lethality), Melee Combo Counter Mods (except  Drifting Contact), Acolyte Mods (e.g.,  Blood Rush), or Amalgam Mods (e.g.  Amalgam Organ Shatter).
  • Riven Mods are not generated for Exalted Blade.
  • The combo counter will reset when equipped with  Xoris.
  • Exalted Blade's combo counter decay is affected by  Naramon's  Power Spike.
  • Radial damage from slam attacks diminishes with distance, does not have a critical chance, is not affected by the Melee Combo Counter, and will cause enemies within range to suffer a  Knockdown.
  • Ground finishers inflict 400% of the total modified damage from normal attacks. Prompted Finishers inflict 3200% of the total modified damage from normal attacks as  True damage.
• Exalted Blade costs 25 Energy to activate, then consumes 2.5 energy per second while active and will remain active until Excalibur's energy is depleted, or the ability is deactivated by pressing the ability key again.
  • Exalted Blade's energy drain is not converted into shields by Augur Mods.
  • Excalibur cannot replenish energy using  Energy Vampire,  Rally Point, Rift Plane's innate energy regeneration, Squad Energy Restores,  Energy Siphon,  Energy Nexus,  Dreamer's Bond, and/or  Wellspring while Exalted Blade is active.
  • Energy Orbs, Orokin Void Death Orb's energy restores,  Rage,  Hunter Adrenaline,  Spellbound Harvest,  Arcane Energize, and  Emergence Dissipate's Energy Motes can still replenish Excalibur's energy while Exalted Blade is active.
• Exalted Blade is affected by and can trigger Warframe Arcanes.
• Exalted Blade is not affected by and can not trigger Exodia Arcanes with the exception of  Exodia Might, which Exalted Blade both triggers and is affected by.
• While active, Exalted Blade will use an exclusive stance with its own set of combo attacks.
• Ability Synergy:  Slash Dash will receive a +10% bonus to its base damage from Excalibur's Passive and each hit will release an energy wave when Exalted Blade is active.
  • Slash Dash hits add to Exalted Blade's Melee Combo Counter.
  • Energy waves behave identically to those of Exalted Blade.
    • The energy waves and Exalted Blade are considered separate entities and will deal damage separately.
  • Waves will hit both the targeted enemy and all enemies behind it.
  • Waves are affected by mods on both the equipped melee weapon and on  Exalted Blade.
  • The energy waves are able to deal critical hits and status effects.
    • Critical and status performances are affected by equipped critical chance and damage mods, status chance mods, and  Chromatic Blade.
• Can be cast while moving or sprinting without interruption.

Weapon

Exalted Blade is  Excalibur,  Excalibur Prime, and  Excalibur Umbra's signature Exalted Weapon, summoned by activating the ability of the same name. The weapon exclusively uses the Exalted Blade stance.

• Wave damage dissipates with range.
• Wave hits do not count towards the Melee Combo Counter or proc Tennokai.
• Damage isn't affected by the combo counter, even if built with the physical blade.
• Low wave flight speed.
• Requires energy to activate and keep active.
• Slide attack blinds do not open affected enemies to Finisher Attacks.
• As an Exalted Weapon, it cannot benefit from, nor contribute to the set bonus of any Set Mods (excluding the Sacrificial Mod Set; the Gladiator Mod Set can still apply if equipped on Melee Weapons, and not on the Exalted Weapon itself).
• Cannot equip Melee Combo Counter Mods (except  Drifting Contact), Acolyte Mods (e.g.,  Blood Rush), or Amalgam Mods (e.g.,  Amalgam Organ Shatter).
• Cannot equip Melee Arcane Enhancements.

Stance

Exalted Blade is a unique Stance exclusive to  Exalted Blade that can only be acquired and used by activating  Excalibur's fourth ability,  Exalted Blade. This Stance overrides the Stance on any currently equipped melee weapon for as long as Exalted Blade remains active.

A "thrust attack" is a melee strike that intends to hit an enemy with the tip of the blade (the rounded edge of obround melee hitbox). A "360/spin attack" is a sliding sweep attack that hits targets around the player (not always in a 360° arc, but is usually above 180°). A "direct slam attack" is a melee strike that hits a single target at the epicenter of a slam attack. A "radial slam attack" is the area-of-effect component of the melee slam attack. Affected by the Seismic Wave mod. A "ranged attack" is any melee attack that launches a ranged projectile or can hit targets beyond melee range. Chromatic Blade is a Warframe Augment Mod for  Excalibur's  Exalted Blade that increases  Exalted Blade's status chance while changing its damage from physical damage to a primary elemental damage, depending on Excalibur's chosen primary emission color.

Tips & Tricks

• Due to Exalted Blade's waves being able to unlimitedly punch through up to its maximum range, Exalted Blade is well suited to taking out hordes of enemies, especially if they are huddled together.
  • Furthermore, Exalted Blade can be used to deal with enemies while in cover without requiring punch through mods.
• The innate slide attack blind provides a cheaper alternative to Radial Blind, albeit with greatly reduced duration and range. (Note that the Radial Blind power is cheaper both per meter of range and per second of effect, despite having a higher cost per cast.)
  • Allows players to blind enemies and quickly deal with them without being delayed by finisher animations.
• Combined with  Mag's  Magnetize or a  Void status effect, the sword waves can be redirected to hit the enemies inside multiple times until its maximum range can be reached.
• Crouching will allow the use of all Exalted Blade attacks while remaining entirely stationary; this can be extremely useful during boss fights, defense missions, survival, etc.

Bugs

• Using this ability during an "Unarmed" bug will result in Exalted Blade having the same stats as your Melee Weapon, and sometimes will perform your Melee Weapon's Unsheathed attacks without the Waves.
• If Excalibur enters Bleedout state while Exalted Blade is active, Excalibur will use his melee and sometimes primary weapon rather than his secondary.
