Harness antimatter. Nova uses antiparticles to provide crowd control and amplify damage output. She obliterates enemies by destabilizing matter itself.

This is Nova, wildly unpredictable.

Nova's presence on the battlefield is complex and deadly. Handle with care, Tenno.

Release Date: July 13th, 2013

Nova is a high-tech, antimatter themed Warframe. She is somewhat fragile, lacking any powerful defensive abilities and having low shield capacity and moderate health. In return, she features extremely powerful offensive abilities capable of demolishing entire waves of enemies. Nova materialized in Update 9.0 (2013-07-13).

Acquisition

Nova's main blueprint can be purchased from the Market. Nova's component blueprints can be obtained from defeating the Raptors on Naamah, Europa.

Lore

Main article: Leverian#Nova
Nova. Mercurial, unpredictable and a miraculous example of harnessed antimatter.

It would be a bold fool indeed who tried to tame lightning. One such individual was Holsom Yurr, a freelance problem-solver who commanded high fees for his low morals. A deficiency that netted him great success in endeavors where a conscience would have held others back. He is the only figure known to have secured a back-channel charter permitting him to selectively raid certain rails, so long as Orokin ships were avoided. The story of Nova and Yurr survives via the captain and security logs of the Orokin vessel Masker's Theodolite. It survives because it was deemed to be... of historical importance.

Orokin investigators scrutinized every frame of security footage, each line of the captain's log, for assurance that the outcome of this encounter was indeed true.

Holsom Yurr was a notorious rail pirate who was hired to neutralize Nova. In his calculated plan, the pirate lured Nova onto the Orokin vessel, Masker's Theodolite, by rupturing its antimatter reactor as it was being drawn into a gravity well of a planetoid. Once Nova was aboard, he jettisoned all of the ship's escape pods and then the antimatter core. Without the core, the ship's reactor ceased to function, threatening the lives of its 10,800 crew. Nova, a being that contains and harnesses antimatter, would be forced to sacrifice herself in order to replace the antimatter core.

Turning to the technicians she had saved, Nova threw her Hikou Hikou stars at Yurr's surveillance cameras and devised a strategy. She then walked into the reactor chamber, only for the technicians to override the blast doors to allow her to WormHole130xWhite Wormhole into the bridge and MolecularPrime130xWhite Molecular Prime Yurr and his mercenaries, picking them off with her Alamos Sniper. She then grabbed Yurr and threw him back into the series of Worm Holes, bringing him into the reactor chamber, before they collapsed and the blast doors sealed shut.

The pirate's molecules reached critical and his body went nova, and the ship's engines roared to life. Yurr met his fate as antimatter fuel for the Masker's Theodolite.

Yurr struggled to his feet as every molecule in his body approached critical.

Behind the glass the technicians gave him a final, grim salute before slamming the blast door closed. Holsom Yurr, pirate and legend, went nova. The reactor caught the reaction. The technicians harnessed it, and the engines of the Masker's Theodolite roared to life. It was, indeed, the boldest of fools who attempted to leash lightning. And so a notorious rogue, said to be unkillable, met his end in the attempt.

As the historical record now demonstrates.

Trivia

  • Both the name and the abilities of this Warframe were chosen by submissions of Design Council being filtered by Digital Extremes then voting by the Design Council community.
  • Nova is one of the fastest Warframes, with a base sprint speed third to GaussIcon272 Gauss, second to LokiIcon272 Loki, and tied with Ash PrimeIcon272 Ash Prime, MirageIcon272 Mirage, and WispIcon272 Wisp.
  • The term nova refers to the violent outbursts of energy that occur in cataclysmic variable stars. These variables are actually binary stars that consist of a tidally-distorted companion that accretes stellar material onto the surface of a white dwarf. In this accretion disk, the infalling matter is highly compressed on the white dwarf's surface due to its immense gravity. This process increases the pressure and temperature of the collected matter tremendously: enough to burn hydrogen. As this matter contains mostly hydrogen, runaway fusion reactions occur on the white dwarf's surface, producing an extremely bright thermonuclear outburst.
  • According to Nova's original profile, this Warframe was a result of Tenno High Council research. This is widely believed to be a nod to the Design Council that aided in Nova's creation.
  • Nova is the last Warframe with a helmet that grants statistical changes (The Nova Flux Helmet), as all helmets released from NekrosIcon272 Nekros onward have since been entirely cosmetic.
  • Currently one of four frames that has three alternate helmets, the others being LokiIcon272 Loki, ExcaliburIcon272 Excalibur, and VaubanIcon272 Vauban.
  • In her Leverian entry Nova is described to have created a chain of linked portals in vents she didn't actually go through herself, as if she was able to place portals behind walls and facing the correct direction. It's unknown if this is just a dramatization or mistake on the Leverian's part for misinterpreting these ancient Warframe stories, or a capability Nova is supposed to be able to do lore wise.

Bugs

  • Dying while wearing a different helmet and using a different color scheme causes Nova's head to return to default coloring.

Notes

  • Nova Prime, compared to NovaIcon272 Nova:
    • Higher Shields (270/370 vs. 180/280)
    • Higher Armor (135 vs. 105)
    • Higher Energy (215/265 vs. 175/225)
    • Additional Madurai Pol Polarity (Madurai PolMadurai PolMadurai Pol vs. Madurai PolMadurai Pol)
  • As with any other Prime Warframe, moving close to the location of an Orokin Void Death Orb will restore a pulse of 250 Energy to nearby allies, even if that Death Orb is inactive, destroyed, or non-present. This effect can only occur once per orb.
  • Nova Prime's NullStar130xWhite Null Star and AntimatterDrop130xWhite Antimatter Drop both feature opaque gold spheres instead of the translucent spheres of her non-Primed counterpart.

Trivia

  • Nova Prime is the second prime Warframe after Nyx PrimeIcon272 Nyx Prime to have two enhanced stats, in this case, increased Shields and Energy over her normal version.
    • She is also the second prime Warframe with a boost to shields, the first being Frost PrimeIcon272 Frost Prime.
  • Nova Prime marks the first time that an Open Beta Warframe – NovaIcon272 Nova – has received a prime variant. The previous seven prime Warframes (ExcaliburIcon272 Excalibur, FrostIcon272 Frost, MagIcon272 Mag, EmberIcon272 Ember, RhinoIcon272 Rhino, LokiIcon272 Loki, NyxIcon272 Nyx) are based on designs from the Closed Beta period.
  • Unlike previous prime Warframes, Nova Prime's gold parts can be recolored, which was made possible with the new Physical Based Rendering (PBR) techniques utilized in updates of the graphics engine first introduced at the time of her release. The SomaPrime Soma Prime, VastoPrime Vasto Prime and the Pyra Syandana Prime that came with Update 15.7 (2014-12-17) share the same feature.
  • Nova Prime's long ring neck design resembles the neck rings from the Kayan Tribe in Burma.
  • Nova Prime is the second prime Warframe to have a non-static model, the first being Rhino PrimeIcon272 Rhino Prime, as her helmet and back have casings that open with advanced movement and activation of abilities, causing her energy coils to glow more intensely.
  • The name "Nova Prime" would later on be re-used by the Transformers character of the same name in the IDW Transformers Comics and Transformers: Devastation.

Bugs

  • Her moving parts will often become reversed, staying open even when the player is standing still with no powers currently active, and zooming in with a weapon will close them, with them re-opening when exiting zoom. The only way to fix this issue (although it will continue to happen) is to use a power.

Passive

Whenever NovaIcon272 Nova is knocked down, she emits a neutron burst which knocks down and damages enemies in a 6 meter radius and 250 DmgBlastSmall64 Blast damage.

  • Knockdown radius and damage are not affected by Mods.
  • Self-Stagger knockdown will also trigger this passive.

Update 34.0 (2023-10-18)

Base vs Final Stats in Modding - Health / Energy / Shield / Armor Stat Overhaul

If you’ve spent any time invested in the deeper nuances of Modding, you may be familiar with “Warframe Math” - math that upon first glance doesn’t really make sense, but once you learn the inner workings of the game, it all comes together. While we can appreciate the value that complex systems offer to a certain subsect of players, there are other aspects of the game that should have clear and understandable outcomes. Namely: Shield, Health, Energy, and Armor Modding.

Pop quiz: what is 300 + 440%? If you answered 740, you may just be an Excalibur player.

Vitality (+440% Heath), Redirection (+440% Shields), Flow (+150% Energy), and Steel Fiber (+110% Armor) come with large modifier values that don’t seem to match their outcome in-game. This is because these Mods apply their multiplier to the base stats of the Warframe - i.e., the stats you have at Rank 0. In the Excalibur example, a Rank 30 Excalibur’s Health stat of 300 earns an additional 440 Health from max rank Vitality (+440% Heath) since it applies to his base rank Health stat of 100, resulting in 740 total health.

In this update, we have removed this obfuscation by having Health, Shield, Energy, and Armor Mods apply to the stats of Warframes at their current rank. Continuing our Excalibur example, instead of Vitality always applying to Excalibur’s base rank 100 Health, it would apply to his Health stat based on his rank - namely, the stat you can actually see in your Arsenal. If your Excalibur were Rank 30, his Health stat would be 300, which means Vitality’s multiplier would be calculated off of 300.

With previous Health and Mod values, additional adjustments are needed to make this revision work while maintaining game balance. By only changing where the multiplier applies, a Rank 30 Excalibur would receive an extra 1,320 Health from max rank Vitality, resulting in a total health stat of 1,600. This outcome is a significant buff, which is not the intention of this system change.

To remedy this, we approached this problem in two ways:

1 - We reduced the overall multiplier for Health, Shield, Energy, and Armor Mods.
Since these now affect Max Rank Warframe stats, these Mods need to scale differently to maintain the status quo. Additionally, we wanted these new values to be as clear and understandable to all players as possible! Here are a few examples of these value changes:

  • Vitality: Reduced from +440% to +100% Health
  • Redirection: Reduced from +440% to +100% Shield Capacity
  • Steel Fiber: Reduced from +110% to +100% Armor
  • Flow: Reduced from +150% to +100% Energy Max

Note: These are not all of the Mods affected by this change. We share the comprehensive list further down in this section of the update notes.

Doing some quick math, this means that a Rank 30 Excalibur (300 Health) with a reworked Vitality Mod (+100% Health, applied to the final Health stat) would receive 300 extra Health, for a total of 600. That, in contrast, is a nerf, which we also don’t want to do.

So, our next step:

2 - We adjusted Warframe Health, Shield, Energy, and Armor values to keep the end result of the revised Mods as close to the original values as possible.

With this change, Excalibur’s Rank 30 Health stat is 370. With +100% Health from a max Vitality Mod, his resulting Health stat would be 740, which matches what it was originally.

While this path to the same result may seem a little complicated, the outcome matches our intention: we want players to be able to look at their Health, Shield, and Armor Mods, and be able to understand how they affect the stats they see in their Arsenal.

In addition to everything above, we also increased the base stat values for Warframes so that these revised Mods offer similar value for lower-ranked Frames. To do so, we reduced the amount of Health/Shield/Energy that Warframes earn per rank in half, and transferred the sum of that value to their base stats.

For Armor, this is the one stat that does not increase with your Warframe’s level (with some exceptions). Armor values across the board have been slightly increased to compensate for the Mod changes.

Not to beat a dead Kaithe, but Mods will now be applying to the Max Rank stat instead of the Base Rank. You may look at these numbers and think “nerf” or “buff” depending, but the outcome is that total Modded values are the same, if not a little higher in some cases.

Warframe Stat Changes:

NOVA
Health: Base Rank - 270 (from 100) / Max Rank - 370 (from 300)
Shields: Base Rank - 180 (from 75) / Max Rank - 280 (from 225)
Armor: Base Rank - 105 (from 100)
Energy: Base Rank - 175 (from 150) / Max Rank - 225 (from 225)

NOVA PRIME
Health: Base Rank - 270 (from 100) / Max Rank - 370 (from 300)
Shields: Base Rank - 270 (from 100) / Max Rank - 370 (from 300)
Armor: Base Rank - 135 (from 125)
Energy: Base Rank - 215 (from 175) / Max Rank - 265 (from 263)

While there may be significant changes to Warframe Stats and Mod values as a part of this overhaul, the end result is that your Builds should mostly stay the same. The key difference is the added clarity of what your Health / Shield / Energy / Armor Mods do in your Upgrade screens!

Top Fixes:
  • Fixed Nova’s Antimatter Drop damage being inconsistent between Host and Client.
    • With the same Mod loadout, Clients were doing significantly less damage than the Host (who had the intended damage output).

Hotfix 33.6.4 (2023-08-15)

  • Fixed offset issues with shoulder attachments equipped on the Nova Atomica Skin.

Hotfix 32.0.9 (2022-10-05)

  • Nova’s Neutron Star Augment Changes:
    • Added line of sight (LOS) requirement to its AOE explosions and for the Stars to find targets, ignored for the first 5 meters
    • Reduced explosion radius from 16m to 8m.
      • After Neutron Star’s damage and range was buffed in the Veilbreaker update, the Augment's usage increased by over 67 times and climbing. Because of the Helminth system, this Augment was being used more than Nova herself. Changing the Augment to Heat damage while also releasing Archon Vitality resulted in higher damage than anticipated (multiplied by squadmates’ damage boosts), and the auto-seeking nature made Neutron Star far better at room clearing than other Helminth radial damage abilities like Thermal Sunder. We have a history of encouraging engagement with the enemy instead of automation, so LOS changes seemed the most important factor to address, while still letting it maintain the new high damage features.
  • Fixed several script errors related to Nova’s Null Star.

Update 32.0 (2022-09-07)

WARFRAME AUGMENT BUFFS PART 2

Nova’s Neutron Star

  • Was: On recast, all remaining particles will seek out enemies and deal 120 Blast Damage with guaranteed Status Effect in 8 meters.
  • Now: On recast, all remaining particles will seek out enemies and deal 240 Heat Damage with a guaranteed Heat Status Effect to foes within 16 meters. Particles from Neutron Star have a doubled “seek radius” to find targets compared to Null Star.

Nova’s Antimatter Absorb

  • Was: Absorbs enemy bullets within 3 meters, increasing its damage when it explodes.
  • Now: Absorbs enemy bullets within 5 meters, increasing its damage when it explodes.
FIXES:
  • Fixed visual issue with how instant teleports (ex. Nova's Wormhole) appear to other players observing the Ability.

Hotfix 31.6.2 (2022-06-15)

  • Fixed script error from Nova’s Antimatter Drop.

Update 31.6 (2022-06-09)

  • Fixed some root motion issues with Nova’s speargun animations.

Hotfix 31.5.7 (2022-05-06)

  • Fixed the wrong sound FX playing on Nova’s Antimatter when Inner Might’s charge is ready.

Update 31.5 (2022-04-27)

  • Nova's Null Star will no longer launch projectiles at enemies which are dead or downed (ex: disabled Bursas, downed Hounds/Thralls). This is to prevent wasting charges.
  • We have updated certain Warframe abilities to now affect allied NPCs! In the past, these abilities used to work to varying degrees of effectiveness, we now fixed some lingering issues with each of the abilities and they should be far more effective at assisting these allies in mission.
    • Changed the following Warframe Abilities to work on friendly NPCSs (Kavor Defectors, Cetus & Orb Vallis Drones, Specters, Companions, & Rescue Targets):
      • Nova’s Portal
  • Fixed Nova’s jets flickering upon changing loadout.
  • Fixed Nova’s Null Star making her invincible with Helminth Invigarations.

Hotfix 31.3.1 (2022-03-29)

  • Fixed being able to hit 100% invulnerability when combining Nova’s Null Stars and Helminth’s +100% Duration Invigoration.
    • The usual modding limit for maximum Duration on Null Star would allow a maximum of 90% damage reduction. But with the addition of the Nira’s Hatred mod and Helminth’s +100% Duration Invigoration, it pushed over that limit to reach 95% and even 100% damage resistance, which would make you invincible until you had lost a few stars. This was not intended and has been fixed to return it back to maintain the 90% max damage reduction.

Hotfix 31.0.11 (2022-01-25)

  • Nova's Worm Hole can now act as a one-way teleport for ally NPCs.
    • One of our key motivations behind this change came from discussing the Escort Drone Bounty, and how the momentum at which the Drone paths to reach its objective can feel sluggish for those who’ve repeatedly completed the Bounty. This change to Worm Hole may encourage players to strategically bring Nova to aid in guiding the NPC along its path if they choose to.

Hotfix 30.0.6 (2021-04-20)

  • Fixed Nova Rifle animation having unnatural movements.

Hotfix 29.6.7 (2021-01-13)

  • Fixed a script error when casting Nova’s Antimatter Drop ability.

Hotfix 29.2.3 (2020-10-08)

  • Fixed a script error when casting Nova’s Null Star ability.

Hotfix 28.3.1 (2020-08-12)

  • Fixed a script error when casting Nova’s Molecular Prime Ability.

Update 28.3 (2020-08-12)

  • Fixed ability to teleport Excavators with Nova’s Wormhole.

Hotfix 28.0.4 (2020-06-12)

  • Fixed the Dessicata Syandana appearing to float away from Nova.

Update 27.4 (2020-05-01)

  • Nova Ability videos have been added to their respective Arsenals!
  • Fixed several Syandanas (Altra, Centuria, Kerata, Kuva Braid, Maggor, Sigma Series, and Vaykor) not sitting correctly on Nova’s Atomica skin.

Hotfix 27.3.15 (2020-04-17)

  • Fixed a script error with Nova’s Antimatter Drop with the Atomica Skin equipped.

Update 27.2 (2020-03-05)

  • Armor Change:
    • Nova: 65 to 100
    • Nova Prime: 65 to 125
    • Why: The conversation surrounding Arcane Guardian led to a significant review of Armor stats on Warfarmes. The Majority of Warframes received an increase in the Armor stat to increase survivability. Compounded with Shield Gating and the numerous other changes covered, we expect a much more fair feeling playing field for all Warframes.
  • Nova’s Wormhole will now teleport players’ weapon fire - You may remember we discussed the possibilities of this on Devstream #137. Well we saw your reaction to the possibility and we thought...why not make it a reality!
  • Changed Nova’s Molecular Prime casting FX to have better positioning.

Hotfix 25.7.5 (2019-09-09)

  • Fixed Nova’s Antimatter Drop exploding prematurely when aiming with your gun, and looking down a bit. We attempted to fix this in Hotfix 25.7.4 (2019-09-05) but it actually broke it more!

Hotfix 25.7.4 (2019-09-05)

  • Fixed Nova’s Antimatter exploding prematurely when aiming with your gun, and looking down a bit.

Update 25.7 (2019-08-29)

  • Fixed the Huntress Bundle diorama in the Market displaying Nova instead of Ivara.
  • Fixed issues with Nova escaping certain maps for easy-mode Defense.
