Why is this weapon under the axe category? It is clearly just a big sword,

axe is just the name, its more properly for heavy bladed melees, axe is just for short
It's like how the Kama is a "machete". Sometimes very different weapons have the same animations and they had to choose a name for the stance class some point. Just keep reminding yourself, things are always in development...
Yeah, this game needs to re-think how melee weapons are organized. For examle the Jat Kittag, Is it a hammer, polearm, or mace? All of these would make sense because they share similar qualities. Hammer because it uses hammer mods, and is hammer shaped, polearm because it has the pole arm stance and long handle, and mace because it is described as a mace in its codex description. It it really confusing. Also some weapon categories are really small, like how the polearm group only has 2 members to it (the Serro and Orthos that is it) And how the Scindo is the only real axe in the game.

they are named that way due to simplicity, by now we all know that hammers encompass heavy "blunt" weapons, and axe encompass heavy "bladed" weapons, machete I believe encompass hack types instead of fluid slicing types

Still the weapon types are grossly uneven, 2 pole arms, 1 axe, 3 whips, 1 sword shield combo and 1 tonfa (that look moe like butterfly wings) They should be balanced out more.

You speak as if they are not going to do this anyways. The artists are free to work on the stuff they do, and good concepts get the higher priority. Guess they just havent taken time to work on another concept for the weapon types that are "lacking."
