Watching Livestream #12, the dev team shared some interesting thoughts on mods that enhance your mobility. This comes after people are calling for Warframes to get jetpacks (like a Grineer Helion's). The dev team said specifically that something similar to jetpacks are not off the table, but they wouldn't specifically be jetpacks (to fit the theme of space ninjas). They are thinking of releasing a mod/tool (possibly weapon?) that gives your Warframe a grappling hook. The exact details of how this would work is unknown, but the team said that it fit the theme and had a good feel. In this blog post I will list some pros and cons of different mobility enhancer ideas.

Grappling Hook

Overview

Very fitting for the theme of space ninjas, and could possibly allow slower warframes to reach places that only faster warframes could reach. This would be convienient, as you don't need to use a sprint speed mod. This might also be very fun to play with, regardless of the way you have to use it. However I don't get exactly how it might work in some cases.

Grappling Hook (Mod)

Pros

  • Doesn't take up a weapon slot, and it can be used multiple times.

Cons

  • Takes up a mod slot, and I would imagine it would be expensive in terms of mod points.
  • Would be very hard to find, and up to the RNG to give it to you.
  • It would be harder to use due to it's nature (not a weapon or inventory item).

Grappling Hook (Weapon)

Pros

  • Would be easy to use.
  • Relatively easier to obtain than a mod.
  • Could have some interesting combos
  • Would be very effective as a secondary item (combine with melee weapon)

Cons

  • You have to give up a weapon slot for it.
  • It wouldn't be the most lethal weapon...

Grappling Hook (Inventory item)

Pros

  • Doesn't take up a weapon slot, or a mod slot.
  • If it's a multi-use item, it would be very handy.
  • Potential to be easy to obtain.
  • Who uses the inventory?

Cons

  • It would suck as a single-use item.
  • Difficult and slow to use.

Grappling Hook (Skin item)

Pros

  • Doesn't take up a weapon slot, or a mod slot, and it's not an inventory item.
  • Possibility to be easy to obtain.

Cons

  • Like the mod version, it might be difficult to use and aim.

Jetpacks

Overview

Okay, we're space ninjas. A very small, compact version could be fitting. Maybe. We'll assume these are full on, hovering jetpacks. It will also be a given that these will somehow hinder your normal mobility. Also note, that while these are "mobility enhancers", they don't actually help you much. Sure, you can fly and hover. But they're jetpacks. They're not super fast moving or anything. And aside form that, we're assuming they hinder your normal mobility (slower run/sprint speed, lower normal jump height). So, is it really worth it?

Controls might be:

Double tap jump to use (small height boost to start with)

Jump to ascend

Crouch to descend

Jetpack (Mod)

Pros

  • It's a jetpack... You can fly. And stuff.
  • Because it's a mod, the normal mobility reduction would be less.

Cons

  • Hard to find, RNG.
  • Takes up mod slots / points, and would be expensive.

Jetpack (Skin item)

Pros

  • No mod slot/point cost
  • You can still fly...
  • Easier to obtain.

Cons

  • Larger mobility reduction then mod version.

Jumpacks

So maybe a jetpack isn't that great. It's not that fitting. It doesn't really make you more ninja in the long run, does it? What about a JUMPACK? Slightly similar concept to a jetpack, you strap a bunch of rockets to your back. But while the jetpack focuses on stable hovering, the jumpack doesn't care about "stability" or anything. It launches you into the air with great speed (probably double tap jump to use). This allows much greater mobility than a jetpack, and can be used to quickly evade enemies. However, it is a given that it still reduces your normal mobility to a smiliar (if lesser) degree than a jetpack would.

Jumpack (Mod)

Pros

  • Because it's a mod, the normal mobility reduction would be less.

Cons

  • Hard to find, RNG.
  • Takes up mod slots / points, and would be expensive.

Jumpack (Skin item)

Pros

  • No mod slot/point cost
  • Easier to obtain.

Cons

  • Larger mobility reduction then mod version.

Rocket-boots

Strapping rockets to your back is pretty bulky, and reduces alot of mobility. Why not strap them to your feet instead? The concept of Rocket-boots is that it enhances your current movement with rockets, as opposed to allowinf you to straight out fly. Rocket-boots reduce your running speed. And to compensate, they activate whenever you sprint or jump. The main points are that they allow you to "sprint" (or glide along the ground) much faster, your jumps are longer and higher, and there is the possibility to slow and control your fall speed/direction (holding/toggling crouch while falling). Don't forget, it helps your wall running ability and there is the idea that it might even add bonus damage to your melee attacks. This is much more fititng to space ninjas than the other two rocket-powered ideas, and it could combo with grappling hooks for very interesing mobility enhancers.

Rocket-boots (Mod)

Pros

  • Relatively lower running speed hinderance.
  • Could be upgraded to increase your max speed / jump distance and height.

Cons

  • Hard to find, RNG.
  • Takes up mod slots / points, and would be expensive.

Rocket-boots (Skin item)

Pros

  • No mod slot/point cost
  • Easier to obtain.

Cons

  • Lower sprint and jump bonus than mod version.

Rollerskates / Rocketskates

A more novel idea than Rocket-boots, but less so than jetpacks and jumpacks. Your running speed is reduced, and your jump height (while running) is reduced as well. And the plus side is that you can reach a higher sprint speed, also allowing you to slide much further with significanlty less friction. It's less thematic, but it is pretty fun and not entirely unfitting of space ninjas.

Rollerskates (Mod)

Pros

  • Higher ending momentum.

Cons

  • Hard to find, RNG.
  • Takes up mod slots / points, and would be expensive.
  • Lower starting momentum.
  • Slower to change direction.

Rollerskates (Skin item)

Pros

  • No mod slot/point cost
  • Easier to obtain.
  • Quicker to change directions
  • Higher starting momentum

Cons

  • Lower max momentum.
